The DJ and Performance Project started in December 2011 in December 2011 and invited performers, dancers and choreographers to investigate the methods and practices of DJ culture. Continuing during Schmiede 2012 in September and tanz_house Festival 2012, the project with Mathias Weiss and Magda Chowaniec will examine DJ acts as performative acts, will travel briefly through the history of DJing and will focus on aspects like a.o:

– different esthetics in DJing and in creation of DJ appearance/image/style                            – movement vocabulary of various Djs and music subcultures                                                    – phenomena of a party                                                                                                                      – various gatherings, music styles, differences in social experience                                            – interaction between a Dj as a leader/conductor/choreographer and the crowd

Traveling along these guidelines, the process will allow to research the fields of intersection between a DJ and his public, transfering and translating usually common dance experience onto various means/coordinates of performance like movement, voice, space and time. Analysing a figure of a DJ and his work, we will together create a new field of experiencing physical dramaturgy where DJ and his crowd escape assigned them roles and primal functions.

This project is first adressed to people who wish to physically engage into the process of a collaborative creation, might that be dancers, choreographers, performers, DJs or musicians. Magda and Mathias would like to invite interested artists to follow them and to feel free to contribute to a DJ Performance workshop in form of artistic objects, texts, drawings, photography, movie materials, compositions seen as a documentary, archival work in the topic.

„We hope to find interesting cross sections created by such a context and to provide a dynamic, social experience common to all the participants and analyzing the figure of a DJ and his work, we will together create a new field of experiencing physical dramaturgy“,so the motivation of Magda and Mathias.

The Workshop will be held in german and english.

The project at Schmiede Hallein will run from 17 to 20 September with a final presentation.

The participation at Schmiede 2012 will cost 50,- Euros

Biografien:

Mathias Weiss

It all began back in the year 2000. The early drum’n’bass sounds at the legendary “liquid-planet” parties in Salzburg inspired DJ Diaz, and his passion for Djing was born. His playful combination of jungle and early free techno created a new style based on variety. Playing sets on 4 turntables and being the main DJ of the experimental hardcore band “The Äth” demonstrated his progressive and advanced style.

DJ Diaz paved his sound-way with drum&bass, jungle, freetek, breakcore/mashup, detroitbass, bailefunk, cumbia digital/moombahton and finally since 2005, as one of the 1st protagonists of the Austrian scene, with the upsetting and strong beats of dubstep. In 2006 the Clubnight “TUBEKLUB” was founded with the intention to place new styles in Salzburg. As a party promoter and first dubstep DJ in Salzburg, he joined the “Stereofreezed Soundsystem” that synonymously stands for “free-party for free-people”. Today, DJ Diaz has become one of the main Austrian players, whose openness toward new influences pushes the scene forward. DJ Diaz stands for musical progress, improvement, change and support of upcoming directions in all kinds of bass music.

Magda Chowaniec

was born in Poland and since 2003 has been living and working in Austria. She works with various artists, changing the themes and forms of her creation. In her works – solo performance ‘Hold Your Horses’ (2008), punk concert performance ‘The MOb; Fixing Freedom Tour’ (2009), dance piece ‘Empathy Project Vol. I’ (2010), ‘Bis dass der Tod uns scheidet’ (Until death do us part, 2011), ‘Neuer Wiener Aktionismus’ (New Viennese Actionism, 2011), ‚When I don’t dance I collect crystal balls’ (2012) – she attempts to take social approaches to a new level by means of theatrical elements. Her deep interest in the embodiment of different cultures, physical dimensions, stories, and physical empathy is the basis of her attitude towards her artistic work. She combines elements of documentary work with abstraction, searching for new, fresh connections. Her works were shown in Austria, Poland, the Netherlands and Germany. In 2007 she received a DanceWEB stipend, in the year 2009 she was a stipendiary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Art and Culture. In the Ballettanz almanac 2010 she appeared as a young emerging choreographer. Apart from that, she focusses on her musical activities with The Mob Fixing Freedom and on artistic empathy research.
